Inclusion and equal opportunities are the current talking points in modern workplaces. They are values highlighted in recent years as they play an important role in ensuring that every individual is given the utmost respect. As current and aspiring leaders, we are responsible for striving to uphold these values and enhancing our respective workplaces.
To that end, we’re here to provide you with the steps to pursue a better working environment for you and your peers.
The first step to any problem or endeavor is to identify the challenges and barriers preventing you from accomplishing your goal. This is amplified in issues dealing with people as each individual’s personality and needs can vary greatly. This is why being observant, and practicing utmost care for your peers are valued traits for leadership. It is a non-obstructive way of assessing workplace relationships, identifying needs, and pointing out underlying biases. Aside from observing from the sidelines, having 360-degree surveys and opinion boxes would be great tools for gathering information about the current workplace situation. Remember to take note that these ideas are meant to be done continuously as new challenges may arise at any given time.
The next big change that one can do is to promote transparency as much as one can. Informing your peers as to how you evaluate each other in detail removes the risk of favoritism. It allows you to be open to being criticized for biased decisions and thus allows you to correct your leadership style. Being transparent also incentivizes good work and communication in the team. Take note, however, that being transparent requires an open mind to be absolutely effective. Being ready to take on new ideas and hearing areas of improvement from others would mean letting go of pride to improve oneself.
It is not enough that inclusivity and equal opportunities come as policies. They must be lived out by every member of your team. It must become a lifestyle, a culture. This means that everyone involved should be willing participants in ensuring that each member is valued and included, regardless of their identity. Having this culture also promotes a greater sense of accountability. People begin including others and aim for fairness not because it is required and they are being monitored, but because they understand the value of progress.
Establishing trust through transparency and accountability, while slowly making it your culture isn’t enough. Protecting these newfound changes will be one of the most important, and difficult challenges. External factors can easily affect internal relationships and make others feel undervalued or uncomfortable. This is why how you market your team, and your brand, all matter. Protect your organization and your leadership by showcasing your new stance in your identity. This means social media platforms, websites, and other communication channels must go through a quality control process that makes sure people understand who you are. Not only will this result in like-minded people supporting or applying for your organization, but it also allows you to be a public advocate and ally of “people first” leadership.
